There was never any proof that he was the “rats”’ cleaner or that he pushed that body off the Tower. The connection between the two crimes was the manuscript, but that doesn’t indicate the criminal for the tower crime, and is only circumstantial.
As for the tears, they could easily be from anger or emotional pain due to a complex relationship – the murderer was supposed to be close to the victim anyway. That would be just as likely as sorrow in that context – and remorse isn’t uncommon in such murders. Meanwhile the RL motive didn’t have to match the mystery, did it?
Btw: how fast do you have to strangle someone to death for your tears to smudge the drying ink on their manuscript? Didn’t Ranpo say the ink dried quickly?
