As for the tears, they could easily be from anger or emotional pain due to a complex relationship – the murderer was supposed to be close to the victim anyway. That would be just as likely as sorrow in that context – and remorse isn’t uncommon in such murders. Meanwhile the RL motive didn’t have to match the mystery, did it?
Btw: how fast do you have to strangle someone to death for your tears to smudge the drying ink on their manuscript? Didn’t Ranpo say the ink dried quickly?
