I get why he is leaving the city dangerous for him if they find oud his skill. Plus he will be able to gain more skills in the wild where I’m guessing death and murder is a bit more common than in the city.. MC needs to aquire a few more skills after all..
But it still doesn’t make sense to not tell the truth that it was his team member that killed the leader over the citizenship issue – obvious motive and the evidence would back it up…
Now if they find the knife he will looks very guilty and then they will look more into it and that just increases the risk of finding his skill.

Now that he is a “Double Awakened” in a city that cares little for human rights and would kill to gain extra power–he will be a greater risk in the city than outside.
I am pretty sure that he invented the unknown assailant there is NO WAY he should have been able to defeat one of the awakened and yet he has healed from most injuries.
If he said that he was in the fight they would lock him in a specimen cage and dissect him. Seems pretty likely too. Pretty quick thinking after all the shock
