And totally addicted to the potions.

Speaking of delicious potions that are addictive.
Coca cola was not invented as a soft drink, but as a cure all tonicum. Not carbonated but way more addictive at that time, due to containing cocaine.
Then the scammer/inventor/seller found out people kept buying and drinking it despite knowing it didn’t had any effect just for the taste.
Which he then switched over to. As you might get tarred and feathered, or worse, if you sell a not working cure-all. But if you just sell it as tasty treat it doesn’t happen.
I think the original mixture was diluted with soda water, creating the drink. (So the original mixture was less like the soft drink, but the syrup for the soft drink).

And then the whole anti drug thing happened,

started by one priest who thought of the Chinese opium smokers as too lazy.

Though the result was that the drug was imported from around and the users started to use more and work even less. That gave raise to whole criminal empires still going strong today

After which the cocaine was removed from the raw material.

Speaking of cocaine. That was once a common cough medicine. (Even given to childrens)

And heroin was developed by Bayer pharmaceuticals as replacement, and less addictive alternative, to cocaine. And to wean off addicted cocaine users. Boy, were they wrong! But it was before medical studies/trials.
