That’s a monumental risk, and the rewards, if any, for success, clearly aren’t in any way proportionate to the risks involved.
Are they being abused by the king? NO! Each and every one of them is in a seat of high honor.
They also have large territories, wealth, and lots of political influence. So it’s unlikely they’d get a monetary reward big enough to drown out what they already own. And they’re DUKES! They can’t go any higher on the political ladder than they already are without becoming king, but there can be only one of those without diluting the meaning of having the crown.
Sure, “The Sage” is attacking just for the thrill of battle, but the rest aren’t fighting the king, they’re backstabbing him while he’s protecting them and his daughters.
Is it a difference in ideology? NO! The king actively supports their self-serving belief that martial power is all that matters… unless that’s a lie and all they care about is simply their noble titles, but that’s unlikely as the scheming was well under way before Kyle even applied to become a knight in the first place.
