Combatants Will Be Dispatched

I’m at chapter 30 and think that’s enough to review. The concept was pretty clearly “I have the Konosuba recipe, let’s make another one”, but it didn’t really turn out. It’s not awful, just lacking the charm of Konosuba. Especially lacking is the fun of finding out incongruous things about the world; the flying cabbages and dream brothel were funny because you thought you knew how a fantasy world would work, and the absurdities broke your expectations. This story starts out with a world where nothing makes a lot of sense, so there’s no shock value in something else that doesn’t make sense. After chapter 20 it improves a bit, as you get used to the characters and the roles get better defined. Like Konosuba, it’s more entertaining as the MC has some success and demonstrates some competence, watching a loser lose isn’t that much fun. A little better than mid, I recommend with low expectations.

Summary: MC is a soldier for an evil, and clearly supernatural, corporation trying to conquer the earth. To fund the war, they send MC as a spy/advance scout to conquer a fantasy world. The world is unexpectedly strong and there are lots of misunderstandings, which is comedy, right? Right? …eeehh, kind of.
