Kane lives on one silver every 3 days, roughly 120 silver a year. He lives poor in a rural area, so in the USA in 2024 that might be equivalent to $12000 USD, or one silver = $100. We never get a conversion from silver to gold, but it’s likely 100:1, since gold to platinum is 1000:1. Still, lets choose a conservative 10 silvers to one gold. That would make 6 Platinum coins worth around ($100 x 10 x 6000) $6 000 000. Six million dollars.

How is Sister Sylvia’s debt that big? Why on earth would she agree to it? Also, she pays 200 gold a month in debt service. That’s 3% of the loan, which is not a huge payment, by shady lender standards. But she’s making that by selling potions; potions she buys ingredients for at a rate of 10 silvers per month! That’s a ridiculous 99.5% profit margin.

So, going forward, does every orphan get a house and a college education? She’s making more money every month than Kane needs to live for 15 years. Sylvia’s going to be rolling in dough.

So, why will she pay him less for herbs now? She already reduced the bounty from 3 silver to 1 silver. That seems ungrateful.

In sum, none of the economics here make a lick of sense. I wish mangakas had a central world-building reference they could consult to avoid this kind of thing.
