Dull. Delivering generic tragic backstory in a random flashback like this instead of feeding it to reader by character interaction – this is just what we came to expect here, really.
Imagine how much better it would have been if it was written as a scene of “religious” torture/induction/brainwashing, as this crazy fanatic tries to convince a person (a Mind Control-resisting Hero, for example) that joining her religion was the right choice all along. But instead we have a usual flashback and more uninspired fighting. What a waste of opportunity.
