They are most likely talking about the Pelaponese Peninsula, near Thesaloniki, Greece. It is true that the Navy kept the city of Constantinople(Konstantinyye/Constantinopolist) from looting and razing the city, the army of Byzantium was nothing more than mercs, a lot of people debate that the barbarians were the fall of Rome, but it was the Romanian mercs hired by a former Byzantine Emperor who opened the gates.
