Even if the intro section would have been set up differently, which I totally would.
I would remove everything before the “unexpected” “accidents”, but show the death of everybody (not just the MC) instead. Leaving who’s the MC ambiguous.
In fact I would prop up several characters to look like they’re the MC, before killing them off.
