Banishment has worked so many times. People see the criminal without any power and feel the trouble they have caused in safety from backlash and the criminal’s cause is destroyed and they become the laughingstock. It usually works.

But then you have Napoleon, Banished but his followers did not give up and the conditions did not change. The felt the needed him so rebellion was on again.

And of course you have “Machiavellian push back”. He (Machiavelli) said to kill the entire family so no one could have revenge later. BUT time and time again it was proven that this bred revenge, the arms race never stopped. A family member turned up or others rose up as the witness the barbarism and killed the perpetrators. A legal solution without death, like expulsion, reduced the ‘shock and offense” to react against but execution told you that you were next.

But feeling wise, I still want to be stupid enough to believe that execution would solve the problem. Banishment, the may go away, but execution and there will ALWAYS be someone to ‘repay’ or challenge without mercy–because they know the penalty of failure.

Banishment? Their heads should be rolling down the high street… In a society like this you dont show mercy to the people who tried to kill you. Apart from showing weakness, given the chance they’ll just do it again.
