Summary
A brief description of the manhwa Veteran of the Apocalypse:
He was just an ordinary guy running a small restaurant.
But behind that quiet life…
he was actually a legendary veteran who spent thousands of hours in a hardcore zombie-survival VR game.
Then one day, the world he knew turned upside down.
The game he mastered…dying and respawning endlessly…suddenly became real.
A zombie apocalypse breaks out without warning.
At that moment, he awakens a strange power:
the ability to open dimensional gates.
Now he moves between this world and another, preparing for the coming collapse.
Soon, familiar faces from his gaming past begin to appear…
the endlessly respawning Bunny Princess,
Duck-Butt Quack-Quack who commands monsters,
and other unbelievable players start “logging in” to reality.
The world is falling apart.
Humanity blurs with pure survival instinct.
But he stands firm:
“This isn’t a game… but I know this battlefield.”

Up to ch. 38 it’s surprisingly good imo. Not perfect, but pretty decent.
I’d give it ~4.7.
Characters are well written, art is decent, plot isn’t bad, setting is fairly consistent and mostly makes sense. (despite all the whining in comments) There are some questionable moments, but so far its mostly due to the pacing and gradual exposition. Few major confusing issues were already clarified at some point.
MC is very careful, I’d even say paranoid as hell (which is a bit frustrating, but let’s be honest – objectively speaking, it is the most correct approach to survival at this early stage.) He is not the smartest cookie in a jar, but he doesn’t even try to pretend otherwise. He is flawed and he knows it well. But he makes his own choices and deals with consequences. Some decisions are questionable and some he regrets, some – not.
Despite theoretically OP trait, it’s extremely long-term oriented and doesn’t give him immediate power up. It requires major investments and preparation. With limited resources and very tight time frame, his preparation is solid. Considering iron plague, his priorities (power, tools and machinery instead of default survival supplies) make some sense. Preparing hard drives with different manuals and info is genius.
His “veteran” status gives him nothing but knowledge and few shortcuts. Early awakening even less of a boon – with no zombies around he couldn’t properly level up in advance and had to use every scrap of info just to get lvl 10.
Major “issues” I saw people complaining about:
(some spoilers ahead)
Dude…
> All lighters have metal components – even plastic ones. In a day they’ll become literal dust – absolutely useless and worthless. Matches are 200 times more valuable at this point, bc he can at least use them irl. As for the subspace, he has electricity set up and even access to some bs magical fire rocks, not to mention the game shop. Just chill and let MC have his fun for a moment.
– The Iron plague, despite it’s name, reduced all metals to dust – not just iron and steel. It was directly said in ch.2.
> Idk how you read, guys, but he actually tried. Part of his delivery was denied due to some weapon-related law regulations. He could, theoretically, order custom made in a forge or whatever, but that would take an unholy amount of time (including search, negotiations, etc.) Sword isn’t worth it. It’ll turn to dust irl and he can buy one later in a game shop anyway. Prep’s more important.
It is explained later. It has limitations and MC, strictly speaking, doesn’t decide what comes through and what does not. It all boils down to what system considers his “property”.
It was told earlier, that he recognized them only by system name and that he never saw raw fruits. There were items in game shop with that name, but those were already processed medical powders, packed juice, etc.
Yeah, we all want MC to straight up shoot shit left and right, but c’mon… PK penalty is no joke. Details weren’t explained very well yet, but from my understanding, killers are practically banned from any coop due to the forced kill-zone event.
For now I have to assume that
1) killing a killer is not considered PK.
2) kill zone can be manually triggered by the killer and triggers automatically in case he made no kills for a certain amount of time.
That’s why after the tutorial MC goes to great lengths in setting up indirect killings with convoluted and weird plans, involving zombies and other people.
In this case he tried to unleash the killer on the puppeteer. And when it failed, he finished killer himself to deny XP.
4.8/5 up to chapter 36..
Don’t let the critics in the comment section stopping you reading this… It’s atleast a lot better than many trash in circulations…The MC is not OP, he’s being very careful and using his abilities as best as he could, the plot goes in chronological order and no major plotholes or any weird plot change, yes there might be question mark moments here and there but that doesn’t affect the big picture… Not to mention the level system is not easy, people can’t get instant strong just by leveling up, wounds didn’t heals in seconds like any other fantasy stories… So far so good, i enjoyed reading this, I’ll re-read this in the future when the chapters got lot of updates..
This tries to pretend the MC is a survival Veteran of the Apocalypse….
Remember that as you’re reading through…
Chapter 3…
He throws his light into the fire to start the fire to light it…
Yes…
He throws his lighter into the fire… not a match but a zippo type lighter?
Maybe too many artists have never started a fire??
Literally the list of crappy decisions are endless…
I’d write a list but the chapter comments are more interesting for that!
I’m so unbelievably happy that this novel got a manga adaptation
Genuinely confusing. It’s a zombie apocalypse, yet there’s a fantasy world, fantasy creature, fantasy forests, mutants, a disease that erodes metal, like wtf? Who wrote this? It’s like a moshposh of ideas that they just mixed together.
I originally assumed the fantasy creatures were unique to the portal/dimension he had, but he seems to know them for some reason? This doesn’t make any sense as the original plot was based on Earth and around zombies/mutants?
dropped at chapter 10
*sigh* yet another interesting story premise, that being doomsday prepping for the apocalypse, ruined by the same tropest tropes that ever did trope that every modern manhwa seems to rely on.
Is it too much to ask for a manhwa that doesn’t copy the homework of other slightly (if at all) more successful manhwas did?
3/10
Ratings are high😈😈😈😈
Peak
The counting down to D day gets annoying as especially when in a chapter talk like 2 days past then talk that next 13 days mc was doing all sorts of thing but then chapter end like 20 days while should of been 7 days.
Also the mc didn’t seem to be some crazy rich to be able to buy all sorts of stuff and then build the cave to a modern house in just 2-3 weeks. Never mind all the supplies.
Well the excavator i understand as that can be rented and he did rent a lot of stuff as when you know that apocalypse is coming then who is there to collect the equipment later.
Then there was a talk that mc needs to get level 10 before tutorial starts but the level up is really slow after level 5 at least cause to level 5 it was fairly fast. On the D day mc is level 6 and was taking out lots of zombies even before D day as the Russia ship and didn’t level up. MC didn’t even level up when he took down the one blond guy and got 50 points. While all monsters so far give only like 2-4 points
I really don’t understand from where is the mc taking all his money. Like surely taking a loan or 2 wouldn’t allow him to accomplish such things with his credit score. The prep work in itself cost and takes more time than shown in manga, especially when he’s doing it all by himself and has no experience in construction.
actually peak – only problem is the lack of chapters – cant wait for more
I like how it actually does get into the apocalypse unlike some were they have it 100 chapters later of trying to get stronger
Really good, I recommend this, its also not slop

This is by no means a 4.0/5 or higher. The plot is repetitive, its gets boring overtime. 43 chapters in the story has had no progress and i feel like mc is kinda lame. Its the type of stories you start reading and overtime you get bored and just drop it halfway.
MC 5/10
Story 4/10 (Great concept bad execution)
Overall 4.5/10
