To explain why the explosions–In the light novel, this is made clear, but for some reason in the manga it isn’t:
Ayaka actually uses an explosion skill whenever she hits to punch up her damage. This is a normal skill (not a special skill unique to a hero, but the kind of skill other heroes can use). Whenever she lands a good hit against a strong opponent, she summons her skill at the same time and ignites an explosion with the cut or stab. It seems like the manga kept the explosions but didn’t give an explanation for them.

everyone says ” convenient flashback” but I think that it’s pretty reasonable.
The technique gives you heavy injuries to fully utilize it, so it’s kinda like a “trump card” for life threatening moments ( which I doubt she would ever use in the peaceful modern society) so she just forgot about it.
Only while facing powerful demons did she tried to search for any technique that she has known that would help her increase her strength, which leads to the memory of “the technique that was made to combat demons”
