Eternal life.. yes, that can be nice.. for some time.. but not being able to die when you have no hope? And in eternal darkness? Nah thank you I’d rather die… Also looking at the dialogue of some of the monsters it seems that the citizen turned into monsters at some point. Maybe they deteriorated due to repeated resurrection..
