So many of this story’s plot complications could be dealt with if he would just WEAR A MASK like at the beginning! There’s no reason he has to be traveling as himself right now! Surely he could have put together a fake ID by now?

Hmm. My first guess would be that the “night of mysteries” is a time echo of some sort. A single period of space-time that gets thrown to various points along a multitude of timelines.

The people inside can often seem just as real as you and I, but often vanish without a trace if they aren’t observed. The best way to determine if someone is a part of the echo would be to see them approach you. Human Echo fragments ‘appear’ and ‘disappear’ but they also move at varying speeds when not observed.

If unobserved, Human Echo fragments will often move at speeds that don’t relate to human understanding, causing it to appear as if they had appeared or vanished out of thin air. However, it is also possible that they simply move slightly faster when unobserved, leading it to seem as though the moment you take your eyes off them, they sprint forward a few paces until you look at them again.
