Like I commented before. His Adoptive Grandparents did not do him any favors treating him so babyish. If that is a hard world, it is only natural that he would be so meek and weak.

Way to innocent. His adoptive grandparents failed him where he needed the most. Likely thought he was to innocent, and they had time to inform about the birds and the bees, but died before became mature enough to understand fully.
