Between his halting pusillanimity and her inhuman caprice, it seems utterly impossible that they will ever develop any sort of commitment. And, it kind of feels like they deserve each other. Despite it all, I’m still rooting for them to be happy.

This is abusive behavior. “I know you probably gonna leave so I get close to you and leave you instead. Have a feel you bugger, hah!”
Thats how I read this.
I mean, neither of them is actually communicating, they just sadly look at each other and hope for the hint to punch them in the face.
I’m so glad this didn’t happen in the Novel because this absolutely adds nothing but frustration that these two are not behaving like “adults”.
“I would love for you to stay here”
“I am thinking about maybe staying here”
