I guess 4 of them agreed to let him go while the kid was away. Its kind of annoying that the girls all seemed to have feelings for him anyways. Also, has ex should definitely at least mention them fact she was dating the other guys. If they started dating now, it would look like he got rid if him just to steal his girl. Even if it isnt the case, the reporters would have a field day and her not being honest about it is weird.
Also, the fact that they dismissed him knowing full well that they would likely lose cohesiveness and get stuck like this means they have bad foresight. There is such a thing as a rear gaurd and our mc is probably best in that position. Farther from the risk but still capable of defending the supports back and providing his exp skill. That alone is worth keeping a person. No matter how useless otherwise, double exp means twice the speed. They would take twice as many years or more without the mc and they might not have even formed a party without him.
