Why do they make these MCs so cringey and stupid.
Like I get it. Say he’s a hermit and learned this because it was all he did. If he was really absent from society, he’d have no idea what they meant by elixir this or that. He’d have his own goofy ass names.

But then being told something is super rare and valuable.. ok so a normal person would think, oh wow and this is so easy for me. Why not instead make the “stupid” part that he makes potions using a totally different ingredient base. Or other alchemists try to learn or teach and he simply “just does this” and can’t explain it, but he also can’t make their standard procedures turn out the right potions. Make that the conflict. Like ok if Process X for herb A and herb B should make a healing potion, but he does his magic version of it, and because his process includes or excludes certain properties, his “healing” potion has bizarre side effects. Then you can have the slapstick humor and growth be him trying to make potions without the side effects, and he figures out that’s why his process (which extracts too much, or leaves something out as “unpure”) doesn’t work with their standard recipes. But no one wants to buy his potions made from ingredients other alchemists claim would not be possible without X or Y happening (because their process isn’t pure enough).

If elixirs are rare enough that he might get kidnapped and enslaved over it, let him figure out how to setup a front to protect his anonymity.

Making the MC just be PURPOSELY stupid by ignoring any and all advice people give him, isn’t funny. It’s cringey as hell
