Slight shame the author went with gauge symmetry. It could have been an interesting learning opportunity. “Breaking” it doesn’t result in mass, in many formalisms we would say it can’t be broken. If anyone is interested in looking into it more, breaking gauge symmetries can produce massless, spinless Goldstone bosons. These are pretty much irrelevant to particle physics as they don’t couple/interact and probably don’t “exist” in the physical sense. Some interesting implications in condensed matter systems though.

photons are close to complete weightlessness so adding even a gram to all photon particles would generally crush most things
adding any amount of mass to photons, means that everything the photons interact with will create nuclear fussion and fission, in a sustained reaction because every fragment of particle that fissure will hit other particles and create new fissure and in some cases fussions. The trajectory of that light beam will become a center of a star at light speed. Every light beam would become a nuke, literally and kill its user instantly, it would even desintegrate his photonic form.

But the defensive formation was supposed to stop most physical attacks BEFORE he made it crazy strong which even then was before he went into the broken realm so why not just use that
