I don’t get why he didn’t use what was typical approach for defense against siege armies which was to use boiling liquid (water, but better flammable oil which I think even the greeks used), Crossbows with high tension throws or Ballistae with large spears and crenelations to protect them, catapults or trebuchet with shot/rocks behind the walls, etc.. Flammable oil or alcohol is best (think Molotov cocktail) to target the large phalanxes and shields are limited in defense against. Very effective when shot at the wooden-based battering rams too, particularly if the suspension isn’t using wire or other non-flammable substance. They expected the attack sooner or later and would need to complement the moat defenses.
