These scenes are what were missing from the anime. It gives proper weight and reason as why he decided to become independent.

This kind of self-reflection is a great thing, and he’s been doing it constantly. He deserves every blessing that comes his way. I can’t wait to see the next time he has to confront someone.

I wonder if this makes more sense in the context of Japanese culture. The idea that “I’m not sure I’m a fully decent person because I stopped a crime” is nonsense, and the idea that “I want to become a more decent person, so obviously I need to isolate myself completely from the few decent people I know” is worse. Also “I’m worried I might get spoiled so I have to make sure I have nothing to do with anyone who will treat me well” isn’t logical.
I’d have been completely on board if he had said he wanted to get his own apartment, or he wasn’t ready to be around so many people all the time, or his work is too easy with the Duke’s influence, so he wants to make a rule that he doesn’t discuss work when he’s with them. There are lots of good reasons why he might want a little space or more challenge, but “I had a guilty feeling today so I have to not see you for three years starting tomorrow” is a bizarre overreaction, and it’s weird that the family didn’t push back more for a reasonable compromise.
