This harsh training/ high washout rate trope is Hollywood levels of stupid, but it would feel more relatable in Korea. All the men have to do military service, and until very recently, that was guaranteed to include inexcusable hazing and training of counterproductive difficulty. They felt like suffering abuse and injustice built mental toughness, so they abused pretty freely; I knew a guy who washed out because of a neck fracture from poorly conceived official training, and another guy who got his back broken by hazing, but instead of releasing him, they made him a cook. Pretty much everyone in Korea knows someone with a similar story. Koreans would still not think this was a smart way to train, but it would be seen more like an exaggeration for effect than an obvious mistake.
Great. Using child abuse to train your super warriors. I hope you’re prepared to implant a bomb into them. Because you’ll need it to stop the uprising after the enemy has been defeated.
