I know the author probably did this so MC gets combat experience, or something… But why tf didn’t he just use survey to find the grass???

Usually it goes that way:

Humans find a plant useful, and either there are so many of them that it seems a waste to farm them, or they are hard to farm (/impossible at the current technology)
Humans use it a LOT!
Plant becomes rare
Value goes up
Humans look for the plant even harder, because it is rare and hence valuable.
Plant goes extinct.

In the Mediterranean region once grew a plant with seedpods looking like ❤️. When consumed by humans it prevents pregnancy. It quickly became the symbol for physical love (later love*). Humans used it a lot.
They basically banged it to extinction.
The guy who brought the last specimen was paid his weight in gold.
The emperor who paid that, had a nice meal that evening.
And that’s how a critical endangered species became extinct.

*=Love is also associated with the heart. Both got confused in the middle ages. Hence ❤️ became the heart symbol.

Honestly I’m a little impressed he managed to stop his panic long enough to use appraisal, a little less so that he decided to use an ice attack after it said it had cold resistance…
