Pretty sure the thing hindering the matchlocks would be the rain extinguishing the flame on the rope, not some crap with the length of the barrel. Also, why not make flintlocks? Wouldn’t that eliminate the worry of rain, as well as bringing other benefits? It’s a very similar mechanism, just with flint and a striker instead of burning rope. Cool chapter tho
