He was going to get killed by his superior for not completing the mission too; he was essentially guaranteed death no matter what he did from that point on. He may have also had greed involved, but in the end, he’s just a guy powerless in the grand scheme of things who tried to be something. Not exactly a morally correct character but a human nonetheless, thrown into a hopeless situation. Goodbye
