Gu was actually far more vicious in the novel.

When he was with the “turtle bro” amulet, Gu decided to torment him. Really bad too.

He was in an emotionally miserable state, everything had been lost to Gu, including the hero who he had been following.

Gu started mocking turtle bro by calling him a turtle, which was a sensitive spot for him. Gu feigned innocence and this pissed off the turtle alot. The turtle said he’d destroy his own soul if Gu kept mocking his dignity. He made it sound as a threat causing Gu to laugh a bit.

Gu gave him a glimmer of hope, asking him about knowledge that the turtle had. The turtle hatched a plan, it would avoid giving Gu any real info, all the while waiting for the next successor to come for the amulet. The turtle both implied he had valuable information to keep himself alive but that he wouldn’t give it to Gu, thinking he’d endure torture, but as long as he could meet the next successor, it was worth it.

Then Gu laughed at it while saying “I never cared about your knowledge, I just wanted to feast on your soul.” When all hope was shattered, he devoured turtle bro.
