I wonder if because he has one string he will have an easier time using magic and a sword, because he can only go so far with each.

If the strings of magic really work like music, then one string can be used just as wel to make magic. It has some limitations, but easy work around would be to make 3 “knots” not really knots, but holding the string on 3 point allows you to use the 4 parts of the string separately.
This could theoretically be done an infinite number of times, creating an infinite number of string parts.
Only thing is, I bet it would be difficult to create long strings or make/hold these “knots”
