I mean, imagine being in his shoes…
To east is a massively corrupt kingdom,
Poor quality of life for ALL its citizens including nobility.
Basically it’s a constant secret civil war
& it isn’t developing, but in a precarious spiraling slow collapse.
To the west is the Empire,
But is similar to the holy roman empire before its collapse,
Where it’s far too top heavy in it’s magic& tech…
So also has useless rich families spending money on…..
….. Lamps…… for… pride…
Not charity? Or public image? But only dinner party face?
Eg: also corrupt, not developing.
To the south is the Theocracy,
Which has little info other than their 2 encounters so far,
Both of which were powerfully equipped & magic bands of
Roaming “not Crusaders” & churches spread in other nations.
Hostile to monsters,
Also not interested in development or improving land or peoples safety…
Instead focused on self interest and spread of their faith/influence via economic & cultural expansion, civilians are expendable tools…
“For the greater good” aka extreme evil violence is ok! As long as you believe it will benefit the theocracy…
And when he tries to help the civilians, they are immediately set upon by the local oppressors and opportunists like Hungry Hungry Hippoes….
POLITICS!
There are very few examples of totally good and morally righteous civilizations in history,
And the few that did exist, most didn’t have enough military power so were invaded and wiped out.
Others survived by living in seclusion/hard.to reach places where natural landscape surrounding acts as a deterrent to being found and defence vs invaders easy.
Its why almost all paradises you heard of sounded like fairy tales because they were in far off hard to reach locations with little contact to outside world. (North & south pole, middle of desert, deep underground, or underwater cities, tops of tall mountains in nigh impassible mountain ranges, “lost” islands)
Or they used monster stories to keep people away, and horror stories, while it’s secretly a paradise, and then visitors vanishing was normal because of the monsters, not because the locals were killing all invaders and spies who would spread the truth of their amazing peaceful civilization.
Point is, without a comparison to an actual good civilization, “since we arent taught about any in school” it’s difficult to tell a good from a bad one when every civ you look at is only up evil, side evil, under evil, backwards evil, and trying to compare which is the good one when the multiple choice question is rigged.
