I’m thinking that the land north of the mountains was invaded by another plane of existence, call it a hell plane. Once they invaded, they started to flood the areas they controlled with the red mist which they require to live and is poisonous to the locals.
When the order failed to defeat the devils, the male leaders of the church blamed the witches, turning the populace against them and began to use their blood to empower their solders
