i was expecting gore, so i decided to challenge myself and eat during this chapter
… i made a mistake
the act of using human feces as fertilizer has a long history is often called night soil. the reason night soil isn’t used on a large scale in modern day is threefold: 1. human waste carries bacteria and transmissible diseases from human to human; cow poop is OK because those diseases are very unlikely to be transmissible to humans. (this is talking specifically about transmitting diseases the farmworkers, though there is potential for transmission to buyers through unwashed vegetables). 2. it is difficult to collect just feces—too much pee is bad for the soil as it contains too much phosphorus, and unfortunately all sorts of things are flushed down toilets and 3. regular people find it kind of gross.
that being said you can suspend your disbelief here and just say that people in this world have magical poop that is perfect fertilizer.
