Such pointless drama. After he frees them, they can just stalk him. Once free they are able to stay in town, work for the lord or business or adventurers guild. He can’t make them go away, but they could be targets and people he values (hostages). Once he sees he can’t keep them out of danger, he will be forced to allow them to stay in the safest place, with him.
