Spy X Family - Chapter 126

So the Forger is off looking for a forger…
Why the cliffhanger?! I don’t want to have to wait two weeks.
As some of you know, Anya is modeled after the female lead of Urusei Yatsura, Lum or Rum (I don’t think the reference was intentional). She was one of the first “air head” female protagonist and she was the original and the first “wifu.” She initiated this whole trend of not only otakuism, but also cough, cough, cough, anime porn, hentai.
Her specialty is thunder and her characteristics are her two tiny horns just like Anya’s, and her tiger-like personality and aesthetic because she often wears these oragne and black stripes tiger swim suits In fact, it turned out that’s the people from her planet wears, they all wear something similar including her father and mother.
Furthermore, they are referred to as ghosts (yokai) in the story. I don’t recall if this was ever explained. But, Ms. Schlhag would be pronounced as “she-hag” in Japanese. And a “hag” is a witch, not just any witch, but a ghostly, or a monster witch. You see the regular word for “witch” could also mean a wisdom woman, like the witch in Harry Potter and Kiki’s Delivery Service.
Since Ms She-Hag wears a tiger suit under her jacket and she is wielding “thunders” just like Lum. This is a direct reference to Urusei Yatsura.
In fact, this fight so far has had many references both East and West. Here are the ones I found, you guys can try to see what I might be talking about:
- One Piece (the obligatory one)
- Sooby-doo-be-doo (Anya is Scooby and Becky is Daphny)
- Harry Potter
- Mortal Combat
- The Matrix
- The Varsity Blue Scandal (It’s about college admission scandal in the US)
- Austin Power (because the bribe amount is too little, we know this world currency is actually in yens just like almost every Japanese manga because it has to be a number that the public understands and can make sense of).
- Flash (the DC hero, She-hag’s hair)
- Dr. Slump (the guy who got hit and the smoking head, that was DBZ’s creatior’s creation and that whole Hitler mustache too)
- Naruto (those ninja like movements with left over shadows)
- Conan The Detective (this is about kids solving crimes)
Lum can read minds too. But because she is an alien with God-like power, she couldn’t understand what people are really thinking even though she can read their mind. The whole point of the show is about her not understanding the danger of her power and not understand the humans around her. Just like Anya too. But, in her case she is just too young, remember she is only 4 but everyone else are 5 or older.
As an aside Lum is also modeled after something else. She is modeled after the Genie in I love Genie where a white dude finds a real Genie, a female sexy genie and asked her to marry him, just like Yatsura asked Lum in chapter one. But She just agreed without knowing what it means because like Anya she though it was some sort of a food. It’s like if I tell you, “Would you like to get Married?” And in your mind, you think “Married” means “Icecream” or “Katsu.” The Genie in the original I Love Genie also made the same mistake but she fell for a different request. The man said, “I wish I could marry you.” And so, his wish got granted. As a divorced person, I can tell you marriage is hard, very hard, it’s crazy and its fun for outsider to read about, but its no fun for the man/woman suffering through the marriage.
The new animation adaptation changed this setting, so it makes no sense and people probably can’t even remember all these little bit of history leading to modern anime heroine archetypes. It all started with Lum, not Ayanami Rei from Neogensis Evangalion.
Lightning jutsu, Tonitrus stroke
stand aside Thor, stand aside Zues, the true goddess of thunder and lighting is here.
When you’ve got enough tonitrus bolts to throw them around like shuriken, you are not someone to be taken lightly! 😱
