Is MC really that clueless about most things? He didn’t even know how to counter? That’s one of the most basic technique in swordsmanship. It’s also one of the basic in martial arts and other weaponry uses.

So far I’ve been pretty satisfied with this story, but that’s just bad writing. You’re really telling me that a high ranked noble would be so stupid, that he’d make his paid off puppet surrender like that? That he’s so lacking in foresight, that he didn’t think making him surrender in a knight duel before a sword has even been swung, wouldn’t cause suspicion and complications, and make the outcome unacceptable? At least do some pretend fighting to feign ignorance. Like come on, this is just lazy.
