Either our guy doesnt realize that he needs to buy fresh ingredients, or someone is already trying to sabotage them by replacing their ingredients with rotten ones.

I like how everyone assumes this isn’t a ghost story, and there isn’t a curse on their kitchen.
Me, I’m far too willing to mix up genres in my speculations.
I see rotting vegetables (which presumably looked fine earlier) and think, “Curse! Quick, fetch a shaman!”
