Whether you like it or not, the MC is a typical (ordinary)Japanese, which means: a) AVOID STANDING OUT (in a crowd), and b) conditioned to be a pacifist.
This is where his ‘taking the easy way out’ attitude bites him in the azz when confronted with a ‘kill or be killed’ society. Can’t say what the mangaka has in mind, but the MC is fast approaching his ‘fish or cut bait’ moment’…and it ain’t gonna be pretty.
Actually if Wataru just took that Ferry towards the fleet. They would probably hightail it in fear that it was armed. Also why can’t he summon a Battleship or a Destroyer. Both would make the enemy wet their pants. Just from the sight of it.
I don’t see the interest in a war ship. Wataru isn’t going to be willing to shoot cannons or whatever so it’s just a big, non-luxurious boat, which serves no real purpose.
If it was about the jets and helicopters available on an aircraft carrier though …maybe that would have some use. Even then, I don’t think it would see much use until and unless Wataru decided to openly reveal his special skill.

Even if you can fling magic around while moving on that is battle abilities are going to be really low.

If he is worried about standing out, he just needs to bring out the ferry at night…then leave no witnesses.
I wonder if he is all about hiding his strength whether a submarine would be on the menu; the they could disable ships (cause leaks, destroy rudders and keels, etc.) and just blame it on some unknown sea creatures.
