It’s literally explained that the elder mage was trying to scam him???
Also from most perspectives I would consider how much shit the guy has dealt with (from spawning in the worst part of a labyrinth, meeting tons of plunderers, meeting an op boss) as pretty unlucky. Since he managed to survive and beat those encounters he has definitely gotten much stronger, but they were definitely not “lucky” encounters.
He’s just managed to abuse his extreme unluck to become strong.
He chose to have her in the party when going through their applications
The barbarian went through all the applications in the tavern with the dwarf, seems more likely that he purposely chose her, and the rest for that matter.

Does flesh explosion count as elemental/magic attack? You can’t make flesh explode without something unnatural like magic.
