Summary
A brief description of the manhwa Survive as a Barbarian in the Game:
[By the studio that brought you <Regressor Instruction Manual>!]
After nine years of playing the game “Dungeon and Stone,” which no one had ever been able to finish before, the protagonist, Lee Hansoo, finally reached the boss stage. However, just as he entered the boss area, he noticed a notification informing him that he had finished the tutorial and that he had taken control of the playable character Bjorn Jandel’s body.
After the planet in the “Dungeon and Stone” universe was destroyed, just one city was left standing. Every month a new labyrinth would appear, giving adventurers the chance to navigate it and earn rewards.
A barbarian who does not fight will not be able to survive in this society because barbarians are viewed as useless in everything but combat. The only fate that awaits if one is unable to pay the exorbitant taxes sought by the city is a reduction in status to a “lower-class citizen.” You will be labeled a “evil spirit”
and put to death if it is discovered that you are actually controlling the person you are portraying. Lee Hansoo must enter the labyrinth and battle while putting his life in danger if he wants to live. He tries to survive in this game using the abilities he has developed over the course of nine years of playtime…

At first this seems like just another series about fighting and, well, fighting. But it’s definitely worth a read. The combat is good and the plot armor is not bad and well thought out. Also the actual story (yes it really has one) is quite complex and develops slowly… not to much at a time and just enough at time to trigger your interest. Also there are definite markers for his improvement.
Suggests that you give this one a chance. It is similar to aother barbarian themed manwha but it is a fun read. 9/10
lets goo!!!
6 chaps in a week?
I’m in heaven
His build is essentially a suicide bomber, but instead of dying in the explosion he can survive it with his regeneration and instead of carrying a bomb he is the bomb. He can also grow massive, which no doubt increases the explosion.
This is one of the better written/paced Isekai’s so far (currently on chpt 55).
I hope they keep up the quality of writing. I also love the art style.
omg its back, thank god
Heheheh AHHAHAHAHAHAHAH LETS GOOOOOOO
YOYOYOYOYO IT FINALY HAPPEND
NEW CHAPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LETS FECING GOOOOOOOOOOOOO
looks like we’re waiting on the webtoon version to catch up. hopefully next week new chapter as 52+53 are the latest there as of June 2024.
I guess he didn’t survive as a barbarian in the game…..
is the mangaka dead? 🙁
“The MC is a flat character with no psychological depth and no particular virtue whatsoever.
He often acts unnecessarily harshly with his allies, justifying it to himself with some generic bs about it being a harsh world.”
Huh?
He doesn’t change all the much sure. But when is he unnecessarily harsh? I don’t see it. He tries to keep things pretty business-like for the most part. The series does bring up that his body affects his mentality, if you find that unrealistic that’s on you. thedino says it better.
Obviously the whole thing about the women is untrue once you’ve read the entire season since he had that smokeshow girlfriend in his past life. He’s not that desperate. The series said nothing about him being shy or a virg, not sure where you got that idea from. I kinda wanna say you are projecting(as a joke I don’t know you) but that really is unnecessarily harsh and maybe you just got it mixed up with another series since you’re clearly not that into it. Anyway, the next part about him suddenly changing isn’t valid either because you just assumed all this shit about his past life which turned out untrue. The reader doesn’t know his past life that well so far outside of him being sick and playing the game for 10 years.
As far as game systems go, Surviving as a Barbarian is definitely closer to unique than generic. I’ve read enough game type isekai and reverse isekai to know that there’s more to unoriginal systems than the extreme basics like having stats and skills. The level up system not allowing grinding by only giving points for unique enemy kills, the OG game being a roguelite(making it make more sense for the MC to know the ins and outs of every class), and the essence system, while not being unique in letting you get abilities from monsters, has not only a fairly unique implementation of the mechanic but affects character dynamics like in chapter 35 in ways you don’t often see. If you can name another series for each of these mechanics, then I’ll be very impressed and back down on this.
I didn’t mind the opinion enough to leave a response until you said your tastes are better. You need better thought out justifications to say that. You can think it’s a 3.5 or overrated all you want. I don’t care that much about numbers or popularity impressions since everyone’s scale is different, and people tend to work backwards from their feelings to explain them anyway. I just don’t like the immodesty lol.
it’s 2nd of June wtf.
It said May.
WHEN MOAR?!?!?!?!?!?!??!!
IT’S ALMOST THE END OF MAYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I disagree. First I think its a bit weird to call him a “flat character” with “no emotional depth.” His mental state and will to live is touched on quite a bit, his motivations, all that stuff. I don’t know why him not being a huge pervert after transmigrating is an issue for you, but like one of the major points he has is that he has a VERY strong willpower. He literally drags his bleeding corpse of a body across a labyrinth in the first few chapters. A man that can do that can resist the need to jack off every day.
The personality change is also touched on a fair bit. He is literally INSIDE the body of a BARBARIAN. He possessed the barbarian’s body, he wasn’t born in it. A lot of the basic instincts that Bjorn originally had naturally have an effect on MC because its physiological. Now MC still has pretty good control because he has good willpower, but like his instincts on how to fight, emotions during risky situations, all that is going to be at least partially regulated by the fact that he is in a barbarians body.
I will say its not exactly peak original. But its an interesting and harsh twist on a generally extremely poorly written genre. Like half of the other stories in the dungeon genre MC finds some op as shit and instantly becomes god and barely has any struggles. You can really feel the shitty game design in this game, and how punishing it is.
I don’t know if its a 4.9, but it certainly isn’t bad. It’s a pretty fun read, its reasonably thought out story. Given how much garbage can populate this site, I would give this a 4/5 lowest, 4.7/5 highest.
I think your review is a little too harsh and honestly doesn’t feel like you fully read through hs inner thoughts and the such and only skipped to fights…
