MC met him at chapter 5 or 6, and already ovewhelmed him with his speed. MC broke his sword on the first attack, but only because he still didn’t know how to imbue his sword with energy. Physically he overwhelmed him.
I can’t see how after spending another year in the desolate fortress, MC would be below the white qilin.
MC seems to be worried about lacking in technique or experience, but he’s spent all his time fighting people and honing his martial skills. We’ve even seen him overwhelm high level demonic practitioners in their own field.
If white Qilin overwhelms MC, I call bu77sh1t.

I believe the main advantage of the MC is that he’ll die young because his body is burning so intensely that it will eventually self-destruct. However, in the short term, he’s incredibly talented and strong. Isn’t it therefore odd that someone of his peer group could surpass him? That would imply he’s not as remarkable as he seems. He’s destined for an early death, and additionally, he might not even be the best among his peers who get to live a long, fulfilling life… Or am I misunderstanding something here?
