I just found out that isekai mangas tend to add ‘invent Reversi’ as a trope because in the early 2000s, the Japanese man who marketed Othello (a trademarked version of Reversi with a certain rule set) began to claim that Othello was not a version of Reversi, but a unique independent invention. This made it a point of Japanese national pride to insist that Othello is completely Japanese in origin. Mangas still call it Reversi, ironically, because Othello is an active trademark, so they can’t use it.
This is the same reason that isekai MCs invent “hamburger steak” and barbecue, to help establish the lore that Japan invented those things, and they wouldn’t exist in the world without Japan. From an outside perspective it’s ridiculous, but that is the way of nationalist propaganda.
