If the ring only gave life from killing people – it would be so much more drama. Him having to choose between greater good, subduing demons threatening whole countries and immediate need to replenish life force by possibly killing innocents.
Like this it’s meaningless. Hunting demons is default action in the story – that it happens to extend his life becomes just flavor text.
