Not being from the American South (or anywhere’s south now that I think about it) is the major problem with Chiyo:
1) her age?
2) her annoying personality at this stage (it improves over the next hundred chapters)
3) her being a cousin?
I mean, yeah…the age thing. But if they made Chiyo a student at another high school in Year 1 but she was still his cousin…would this be less weird? Or, is it just the cousin thing is always gross. I know not every society had the same prohibitions (ugh…but still weird). So, I think the author just decided to triple down on reasons we would reject Chiyo at her intro. Think over time they managed to get by two of them. But, um…yeah, at least make her a second cousin.
But on a more important note…Renterou has always been as awesome as he is now. The curse of his birth had to be so strong to keep all one hundred girls he asked out from 8 months old on to say no to the boy! He could stop truk-kun when he was in elementary.
