I guess the reason he became the King’s Spear is because everyone else who came before him died, or by circumstance he was literally the only choice. I certainly can’t fathom any other reason from what he’s shown us so far, why a self-absorbed battle-maniac obsessed with only fighting while disregarding protocol in his King’s own court, could ever obtain his position for competency of command, or for being appreciated by the rest of the nobility. Particularly the latter, since he demonstrated how he likes to go out of his way to antagonize everyone for fun, regardless of rank.
