I think this is why he was picked as a saviour.
Instead of protecting himself from and recoiling from having blood in his hands he is doing it for the greater good.
Calling him cold hearted is clearly not being observent.
He clearly was completely wrecked and couldn’t even kill the cats who accepted death.
How is that cold hearted ?
But he saw how they accepted their place and were willing sacrifice themselves on instinct for the planet.
That’s what made his resolve.
but you can tell in the end he’s affected here.
His power seemed to activate bc of trauma of the monsters.
He saw them eating ppl, they tried to kill him and just a hand on his shoulder left him feeling threatened and was enough for him to panic.
He’s not ok doing this at all.
