I mean this makes little to no sense for the alchemist academy. Rust was basically a very skilled tenured professor since he was master rank. Who has many accolades under his belt and they wanted to turn this person into what amounts to the groups handyman/ janitor despite the fact the seem to have only a couple of master level alchemists. We really only see 1 maybe 2 of them. Mr fungus and the head guy. I mean it appears as if the others are I would guess journey man and apprentice level that we see. I assume there are other master level alchemist as heads of departments but they haven’t really appeared in story.
In a world where this level of mastery is difficult to train to and where the MC is by all accounts a genius in the field. Why would you ever treat such a person so poorly since they would have no issues finding work if not fought over by high level nobles who would pay well and likely give him a large staff for projects. Make it make sense.
