This misunderstanding doesn’t hold water for me. His assumptions might fit if it is just about being the clueless MC trope.
But he has assumptions about what she thinks about the president. And assumptions on her motives are a huge leap given their relationship. Why would he assume she is trying to protect him? And he doesn’t elaborate on any of it. Which he absolutely would. Otherwise her life could be in danger. Or worse. But instead he only uses ambiguous words. In every other situation he’d question the person about what they knew or thought. To mine for information.
Sorry, I can handle cringe misunderstandings but this one bugged me.
