See, if his leaving the army has made them nervous, then they should have been working harder on keeping him. Money does not work? try land. Land does not work? better food. If better food does not work, get him addicted to drugs or women. They could at least have taken him to a mixer or a party. but nope, he is trying to get out and they are nervous.
That adds a level of realism honestly. Never underestimate the incompetence of military leadership.
