Actually, in novel mc was shown as smarter. 
He had placed a leaf on his bags so when the kid stole 2 handguns… the leaf had fallen so he noticed guns missing when he woke up in morning…
He warned them of danger, and kids parents scolded… then he pretended to give what he stole back…
By only returning 1 of the 2 he stole…
