I get finding the MC unlikable at this point, but everyone needs to remember the situation. This is an old man who founded a kingdom amd was betrayed by his best friend’s son. He’s not looking to make friends with these young kids. At most he wants to build a team to get revenge.
He has been harsh with people, but only so far as was necessary. He needs to show his classmates that he is worthy of commendation. Previously, he found a respected veteran who had allowed his rural fiefdom to fall into disarray due to general neglect. Instilling discipline and order was important.
The two people he knew from before, the demon and dead sword master, he has spoken to with respect and affable wit. Sure he tricked the demon a little, but that’s part of the deal. In his past life as chief mage he was well loved by a host of followers, and was willing to be executed to save them.
Long story short: he’s a disciplined, intelligent, old man who has no time to make nice while trying to get revenge and save the kingdom he built with his late friend.
