I think his father was supposed to be some lone wolf warrior and he is at the gat fighting normal soldiers. his father not even contributing much for someone as the king or his name Northerner warrior

I’m a bit disappointed, unfortunately.
In the Webnovel, the siege lasted longer, and instead of burying the runestones at the gate, they buried them in a minefield in front of the entire wall. When a large portion of the enemys was on the minefield, they ignited it in the form of pillars of fire.
The black cloaks were fireproof (made from the tree rot of the monster trees), and so the mercenaries could fight in the fire. Gishlane almost drowned in the original, too.
The way it was implemented here, with all the thousands of soldiers being lured into the trap just because of the attack on the gate, was a bit odd.
