He’s getting preyed upon by an old lady but it’s hand waved because it’s “legal” there are plenty of things that are “legal” you still shouldn’t do them.

The kid missed an opportunity there. He could have told the guild part of the truth: “I got fired because the hero and his party found my necromancy disturbing. So to fit into society i am holding back on magic that melts down my enemies”
People would nod, and that would both stop the questions and explain why he was fired. If they question it, he can show them some of the spells.
